Calibrated AI Quoting vs. Generic AI Price Estimators
Not all AI quoting tools price the same way. The difference between a generic price-list estimator and a tool calibrated to your own jobs shows up in every quote.
Two different ways an AI tool can get to a price
“AI quoting” describes two meaningfully different things. A generic estimator maps a job description to a price using training data or a national/regional price database — the same input produces roughly the same price no matter which business is asking. A calibrated toolis given a specific business's own rates and past jobs as reference points, and prices new jobs against those — so the same job description can (correctly) produce a different price for two different businesses.
Why the difference matters
A generic national average has no idea what a specific business's overhead, insurance, licensing, or target margin looks like — and no idea what that business actually charged the last time it did a similar job. It's a reasonable starting point for a homeowner doing early research, but it's a risky basis for a business to actually quote a customer from, because it can drift either direction: underpricing work in a higher-cost region, or overpricing work in a lower-cost one, with no correction mechanism.
A calibrated tool's error mode is different and generally safer: in the worst case, before a business has added many reference jobs, it falls back to reasonable defaults — not wildly wrong numbers — and gets measurably closer to what the owner would have quoted as more of the business's real jobs and rates get added.
What calibration actually looks like
In practice, calibration means a business feeds in a handful of jobs it has already priced well — the job, the price, and enough context to know why — as reference points (see pricing anchors in the terms glossary). New jobs get compared against the closest reference rather than a generic average. This is also why a calibrated tool improves over time in a way a generic one can't: every new well-priced job becomes another reference point for the next one.
